The Photographer’s Angle: More Than Points
The scoreboard tells us who won. The box score tells us who scored. As a sports photographer with hundreds of games under his belt, I’ve learned the moments that matter most have nothing to do with the stats. Here’s the moments I’ve loved photographing from the sidelines.
I watch strangers become friends.
There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing people from different backgrounds, different regions, and different belief systems come together and work toward a common goal.
I watch people find their confidence.
It doesn’t show up in the score. Watching someone discover their confidence. To realize they’re capable of achieving the things they once doubted they could is such a powerful thing to witness in real time.
I watch teammates take care of each other and celebrate each other.
I watch people have their teammates’ backs, showing up for each other in moments of support, trust, and loyalty. To see them celebrating the success of their peers with genuine happiness.
I watch families show up.
Parents, guardians, siblings, grandparents driving hours to watch a 90-minute game, simply to support the people they love and celebrate their success.
I watch people comfortable being themselves.
I love seeing athletes being unapologetically proud of who they are.
Most importantly, I watch them inspire the next generation.
